Alright, so let's dive into today's episode! Today's episode, we're going to be talking all about what I feel is the magic behind setting income goals in your business - belief, confidence, and vision - they're all important ingredients to any successful business, and you really need all three ingredients, you can't have one without the other, right?
You can't really have a vision until you have that belief and confidence in yourself first, because how could you possibly have this compelling vision for your future with you and your family and your children? If deep down, you have self doubt, and you're constantly hearing that voice on repeat in your mind saying is success really possible for me.
And that's why I always share this almost in every episode, that working on your mindset is the most important thing that you can do. Everything stems and grows from what your mindset is and how strong of a mindset, a positive mindset that you have. So that's why I put all of my time and energy into mindset. And you should too.
So when we think about vision as an entrepreneur, and we have a vision for how we want our business to thrive, the amount of income we want to earn, not just now but I'm talking five years from now, we want to think about maybe the impact we want to make, we also have a vision for the lifestyle that we want to be able to provide for our family, right. So we have this vision for the business, we have this vision for our family, for the lifestyle that we want to live all of these things.
One of the mistakes that I see some entrepreneurs make in terms of casting that income goal in their vision is that they just whip out this random number like, hey, you know, I want to be a six figure producing entrepreneur, which is a great goal to have, right? But they don't really know why they want to hit that number. And when I asked them, well, what's the significance of you being a six figure income earner by the end of this year, they say things like, I just want to be able to say that I'm a six figure entrepreneur, I just think that it would be able to allow me to have so much more freedom. If I could earn six figures, there's just so many things I could do. But they're not really specific about it. They don't really know the importance of it.
And so the problem is, if you just throw out a random income goal, because it seems like a good goal to say that you've achieved and then you have nothing to back it or no significance or meaning to that number. Then when you hit roadblocks in your business, which we all do, you'll be way more likely to slow down, change your goal to a more Save goal that's way more achievable. Or sometimes you even might consider quitting.
So one of the practices that I like to do and I also walk my students through is to go deeper with why you want to earn that amount of income. What will having that amount of money do for you and your family? What will it be able to provide you with, and I want you to write it down, really get clear on this, because this is so important to do.
I'm gonna give you an example when I started my first business nine years ago, and I was going to have to go back to my teaching career. And I was going to put the kids in daycare, and it did not want to do that. I didn't just whip out some random number that I wanted to earn. I didn't go in actually, with a big income goal at all. I didn't go in saying I want to earn a six figures, because of all these reasons. I came in and I said, Okay, how much money do I need to earn every single week to keep me home with the kids, because that's my priority. That's my goal. And I'm going to make it happen.
And turns out, I only really needed to earn a couple $100 every single week, to be able to stay home with the kids, now I wasn't going to have any money in my bank account, I was still going to be broke, I was still gonna have all that massive credit card debt, which was close to $40,000. And I wasn't gonna be able to have any extra money to go on vacations or go get coffee or anything like that. But it would keep me home with my kids. That was my priority. That's all I focused on them, right. So I dove in. And I knew why it was important for me to earn that money.
And so when I would sit down to work my business, even when it was a crappy day with the kids at home, or something went wrong in my business or something went wrong in my personal life, or whatever you name it, there's always going to be something I did not even consider quitting, stopping or slowing down. Because I knew why I was showing up to do the work that I was doing.
From there, I worked my way up - once I hit that goal, and then it was no problem for me to be home with the kids. Then I put other goals out there, hey, well, what about now if I can match my, what I was earning when I was a teacher back in the day when I was earning $75,000? What if I can match that amount. And then I can take that money. And I can actually pay off our $35,000 of credit card debt. So that we could have money now to take our kids on vacations, and I just built up from there.
I always had a reason and a purpose for why I was building my business and the way that I was building it. I always knew and was very clear on why I needed to earn that income. And you need to get clear on that too. So I want you to think about yourself right now.
What are the areas in your life that are really important to you? Is it that you want to be able to have enough income to take your kids to Disney, or you want to be able to finally book that cruise? And you don't want to have to stress about the money isn't maybe activities that you wish you could sign your child up for. But you just don't have that extra income coming in right now. So you aren't able to do it? Is it that trip to Europe that you've been dying to take the investment property that you've been wanting to get? But it's been put on the back burner? Is it going to allow you or maybe your spouse to quit their job and then do something that truly fulfills them and makes them happy?
Like, what is it for you? Why do you show up to your business every single day? Why do you have that certain income goal on your vision board? And then as you answer these questions, right, and you write these things down, keep asking yourself why you want to try to get in go as deep as you possibly can. And get as specific as you can. Because it's going to propel you to keep going through the future, if you really, really, really know why you're here showing up working your business, why you're going for that income goal.
So for example for me, why was it important for me to earn that amount of income when I started nine years ago, so that I could stay at home with my kids? Well, because being home with my children and not missing the moments was important to me. And I understood fully how fleeting that time is with them when they're little and you can't get time back. And that was something that I was very clear on and understood that there's a lot of things in life that you can get back. But you cannot get back time with people. And I did not want to miss out on those moments. And I didn't want to miss out on that and then look back on my life and have regrets about not really doing whatever it took to find a way to stay at home with them and feel guilty about it. I didn't want to live with that.
So the deeper that you can go with your own business and vision for your life, the better!
Have you ever really looked around at other entrepreneurs and thought, man, they're like totally crushing it. Their income is like skyrocketing year after year. Have you ever seen people like that or know people like that? Well, it's because not only do they have that strong foundation of belief and confidence and vision, but they know why earning that amount of income is important to them and their family. And this is going to be something you'll change and continuously think about as your income grows.
Even for me now, nine and a half years later of being an entrepreneur, now that Landon and Kiersten are older, and they're both going to be going to a very expensive private school. Not only do I want to make sure that we can provide that type of education for them, I also don't want to shrink the way that I'm living. I want to be able to continue living exactly the way I am today. And make sure that I can go on vacations and book cruises, with the kids, with my family and with my friends and go on all sorts of different vacations. And I don't want to have to worry about the income because for me personally, it's always been about providing experiences and memories for the family.
So what does that look like for you? And the more clear you get on your vision, the faster you'll achieve these income goals, and it will pull you like a magnet through the toughest times. Because without a vision, there is no possibility of creating something larger than what already exists. So get clear on exactly what it is. What that income can do for you and your family, or have it written down and get as clear as possible because you'll be unstoppable!
Nothing will be thrown in your path that will derail you because you will know why you are showing up doing the work that you're doing. You'll understand the significance of it, the importance of it, and it will have purpose to you.
So, thanks so much for listening to today's episode. I hope that you enjoyed it. You know, I love you. I think you're awesome. Keep crushing life and I will see you the next time. Bye!Hey, my friend what is up and welcome back to another episode of Do Life Big, I am so excited that you're here.
